South Africa: ICASA and MDDA call for nominations to fill vacancies
Two important public institutions in the media and communications sector of South Africa have called for nominations to fill vacancies. The Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA) seeks to fill one vacancy on the board while the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) is also seeking to fill one vacancy on the ICASA Council.
The MDDA is a statutory development agency responsible for promoting and ensuring media development and diversity. It assists the development of community and small commercial media in South Africa.
ICASA is responsible for making regulations and policies to govern broadcasting and telecommunications, ensuring fairness and a diversity of views, and monitoring and enforcing compliance with the communications regulatory framework. The Council is ICASA’s highest decision-making body and hears and decides on disputes and complaints by the industry and plans and takes decisions to manage the frequency spectrum to protect consumers.
Prospective ICASA Council and MDDA Board appointees must express a firm commitment to fairness, freedom of expression, openness and accountability and must be representative of a broad cross-section of South Africa’s population. Candidates must also display the requisite expertise and suitable qualifications in fields relevant to the respective institutions’ work.
Written nominations must contain the contact details of the person making the nomination and must be accompanied by the nominee’s signed acceptance of the nomination with their curriculum vitae, contact details, particulars and supporting documents.
