International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

Today marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and the annual start of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign.

Many activists, feminists, individuals, and states have observed 25 November as a day against gender-based violence since 1981 following the brutal murder of the Mirabal sisters, three political activists from the Dominican Republic in 1960. It is regrettable that 60 years later we are still experiencing and witnessing the sustained assault on the dignity and bodily integrity of womxn, children, gender and sexual minorities, and other vulnerable members of our society.

Today, and on all days, we remember those whose lives have been taken.

Today, and on all days, we stand with victims and survivors.

Today, and on all days, we continue to fight in this war that has been waged against our mothers, sisters, daughters, families, friends, and loved ones.

Today, and on all days, we work towards finding new sources of strength, support and resistance.

Today, and on all days, we continue to rise.
