In the midst of ongoing xenophobic violence in South Africa, this brief guide details how to gather online evidence and report human rights violations.
When you come across content that you think is unlawful, remember to: save it, preserve it, document it, and report it.

Reporting to the South African Police Service (SAPS)
- Report criminal conduct to SAPS, this can include incitement to violence, or a threat or incitement in terms of the Cybercrimes Act.
- Report in person at any station or via 08600 10111.
Reporting to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC)
- Lodge a hate speech or equality complaint with the SAHRC.
- Anyone may complain, including an organisation, on their own behalf, for someone else, or in the public interest. Complaints can be emailed to [email protected], submitted via the online form, or made at any of the nine provincial offices. For general enquiries contact: 011 877 3600.
