Children’s Online Safety Toolkit
Children’s online safety is complex and multifaceted. This toolkit unpacks harms and threats such as online child sexual exploitation and abuse. It provides an overview of South Africa’s legal framework in relation to child sexual abuse and online child sexual abuse material. It deconstructs the various reporting obligations and processes to follow in instances of online abuse or harm. This toolkit – aimed at parents and caregivers – highlights some of the technical ways in which to advance children’s online safety, with a focus on education, awareness and engagement with children. Readers can learn about key principles to keep in mind when considering parental controls such as children’s participation in decisions that affect them. This toolkit concludes with some guidance on supporting children who have experienced online sexual abuse or exploitation.
