Working on a series of written and oral submissions to the Media and Digital Platforms Market Inquiry initiated by South Africa’s Competition Commission.
Representing Media Monitoring Africa as an amicus curiae in a case relating to anti-foriegner sentiment and online harms.
Providing project management support to South Africa’s Media20 (M20) Secretariat and Advisory Group to foster media sustainability and ensure that issues relating to healthy information ecosystems are reflected in the G20 policy agenda.
Advising on data governance for civil society organisations based in South Africa and Rwanda.

About Sophie.

Sophie is an Associate at Power Law Africa, and an admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa. She holds a B.A. and LL.B. degree from the University of the Witwatersrand, as well as an LL.M. in Human Rights, Advocacy and Litigation, for which she received distinctions in Advanced Administrative Law and International Human Rights Law. Her Master’s thesis focused on the right to education for undocumented migrants, reflecting her interest in migrant and children’s rights.
Before joining Power Law Africa, Sophie worked as a legal researcher at the Helen Suzman Foundation, where she spent four years conducting research and preparing submissions on a range of public law matters, with a particular focus on administrative and constitutional law. She also has a strong interest in international law and completed the René Cassin Foundation – International Institute for Human Rights Summer Session on International Human Rights, Humanitarian and Criminal Law.
At Power Law Africa, Sophie’s work spans human rights litigation, research, and advocacy, with a particular focus on information integrity, digital rights, and the protection of vulnerable and marginalised groups. Her practice engages with the legal and policy challenges arising at the intersection of technology, freedom of expression, and access to justice, including the safety of journalists, activists, and human rights defenders in digital spaces.She has contributed to strategic litigation, research, and convening processes aimed at strengthening democratic accountability, advancing substantive equality, and promoting inclusive, rights-based approaches to social cohesion.
Sophie has gained experience across a range of matters, including gender-based violence, media viability, migration, and constitutional and administrative law, and regularly engages in public-facing legal education and advocacy initiatives.
