South Africa: Call for Comment – Presidency invites public to raise objections to Chief Justice nominees
On 4 October 2021, the Presidency published eight nominees for the position of South Africa’s Chief Justice. The Presidency said it received 148 public submissions in its call for nominations, compromising 25 possible candidates, of which eight met the criteria to be nominees.
The Presidency invited the public to submit any objections they may have to the nominees.
The names of the nominees are:
- Judge President John Hlophe
- Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga
- Justice Mandisa Maya
- Dr Wallace Amos Mgiqi
- Adv Busisiwe Mkhwebane
- Judge President Dustan Mlambo
- Adv Alan Nelson, SC
- Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo.

The public is invited to send inputs to [email protected] and [email protected], by 17h00 on 15 October 2021.
Upon receiving any objections, the panel will make a shortlist of three to five names to the President by 29 October 2021.
